Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1984 Prelude.
Equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission and an engine requiring 3.7 quarts of 10W-40 to 20W-50 viscosity oil, the 1984 Honda Prelude delivered an EPA-estimated 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined mpg. While the Engine & Engine Cooling category accounted for the top complaint area among just five total owner grievances and a single recall, the overall issue rate remains remarkably low. Sitting near the very bottom of the model's broader complaint history—which spans from 1990 to 2006 and peaks at 74 complaints in 1997—this 1984 iteration's negligible fault count, just one above the record low of four in 1990, cements its standing as a highly reliable chapter in the Prelude's evolution.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
Owner complaints about the 1984 Honda Prelude dominate in one area — the engine & engine cooling, 2 of 5 reports (40%), well ahead of the next concern. None of this vehicle's 1 recall campaigns target the engine & engine cooling, so those reports read as owner-reported wear-and-tear rather than an acknowledged defect. 0 of the reports describe a crash and 1 a fire — a small share of the total, but worth weighing against the engine & engine cooling pattern above. These are tallies of what owners actually reported to the federal government, not an editorial score — and higher-selling models naturally rack up more reports.
