Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 2003 Sorento.

Body SUVTransmission Automatic 4-spd

The 2003 Kia Sorento debuted as a body-on-frame SUV backed by a four-speed automatic and rated at 14 city, 18 highway and 15 combined mpg. Owner reports for the inaugural year tallied 308 complaints, with Engine & Engine Cooling topping the list and a single recall recorded. Across the Sorento's full 2003–2026 complaint history, the 2003 model sits well below the peak of 1,516 complaints seen in 2011 yet far above the low of three in 2010, marking the debut year as a moderately troubled but not exceptional entry in the nameplate's reliability arc.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 2003 Kia Sorento recorded 308 complaints, 1 recall, 1 investigation, and 30 TSBs. Within the initial generation (2003–2010), the 2003 model sits at the high end of complaint volume, exceeding the 220 complaints seen in 2004 and nearly matching the 307 reported in 2005. Primary complaint areas for 2003 include Engine & Engine Cooling (56), Fuel System, Gasoline (33), and Fuel/Propulsion System (28), although the data does not specify the root causes for these issues. The record for this year also includes 10 crash-related complaints and 3 fire-related complaints. While recalls and investigations were low in 2003, they trended upward toward the end of the generation in 2007 and 2008. Because it represents one of the highest complaint volumes of the first generation, this is not a recommended year to buy.
