Service quick specs OEM factory data

Capacities, torques and tune-up values from the factory service manual.

This engine holds 4.2 qt of 5W-30 API engine oil, 80W-90 · GL-5 in the differential. Torque lug nuts to 80 ft-lbs, the oil drain plug to 29.0 ft-lbs. The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6. Note the cylinder-head bolts finish on a torque angle (torque-to-yield) — they stretch permanently and should be replaced, not reused, during any head service.

Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter every 7,500 mi; spark plugs at 105,000 mi; coolant every 30,000 mi. The big-interval services (every 30,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 2003 Nissan Murano recorded 799 complaints, 6 recalls, 4 investigations, and 109 Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). Primary issues for this model year were concentrated in the Power Train (205), Electrical System (131), Seats (103), and Engine & Engine Cooling (54), alongside 14 crash-related and 5 fire-related complaints. This target year sits at the start of a high-complaint arc for the first generation, where volume remained elevated through 2006 and peaked in 2005 with 986 complaints. While the 2004 model saw a slight dip in complaints and recalls, the 2003 model represents the initial peak of TSBs and investigations for the era. Because it is an early-generation vehicle with high initial TSB counts and significant Power Train complaints, this is not a recommended year to buy.
