1984 Toyota Camry

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1984 Camry.

The 1984 Toyota Camry specifies 3.8 quarts of engine oil in viscosity grades of 15W-40, 20W-40, or 20W-50 to API SL standards. With only eight total owner complaints — seat belts being the top concern — alongside two recalls, this model year predates the Camry's formally tracked complaint window of 1990 through 2025 yet sits below even that range's lowest mark of eleven complaints in 2014, and far beneath the 3,613 recorded for 2007. For researchers, the 1984 represents the low-complaint era that established the Camry's reputation for dependability, a baseline of reliability that later model years would not sustain as complaint volumes climbed into the thousands.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 1984 Toyota Camry exhibits minimal federal complaint activity, with only six total complaints spread across Seat Belts (3), Vehicle Speed Control (1), Service Brakes, Hydraulic (1), and Seat Belts,Seats (1), alongside just one crash complaint and zero fire complaints. Because the provided year-by-year federal record begins in 1990, there is no data to compare the 1984 model against the immediate years before or after it, nor can a specific generational trend be mapped for its original production era. Consequently, the 1984 model falls entirely outside the dataset's documented generational arcs, which later show massive complaint spikes such as the 3,613 complaints recorded in 2007; this implies the 1984 Camry predates the high-volume regulatory tracking seen in later decades. The data does not specify the root causes for its few recorded issues, but the sheer lack of volume suggests they were isolated incidents rather than systemic faults. Given its negligible complaint footprint and the absence of documented systemic failures, the 1984 Camry is a statistically low-risk used buy, provided you independently verify the functionality of its older seat belt assemblies.
