1984 Toyota Cressida

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1984 Cressida.

Transmission Automatic 4-spd

The 1984 Toyota Cressida uses a 4.9‑quart oil capacity with recommended viscosities of 15W‑40, 20W‑40 or 20W‑50 API SL and is paired with an automatic 4‑speed transmission that delivers EPA‑rated 18/22/19 mpg. Owner complaints total only two, centered on visibility, and the model experienced just two recalls. The recorded complaint years (19901992) show a peak of seven complaints in 1991 and a decline to two in 1992. Thus, the 1984 model year precedes this low‑complaint period, indicating that early reliability concerns were limited.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The federal record you provided covers 1990 through 1992, and it shows a modest rise in complaints from 5 in 1990 to 7 in 1991 before falling to 2 in 1992, with no recalls, investigations, or fire complaints during that span. Because the 1984 Cressida is not represented in those data, we cannot place it directly on that trend line. The only specific complaints logged for a 1984 model are a single visibility issue and a single seat‑belt concern, with no recorded crash or fire complaints. In the absence of a direct comparison, the 1984 model appears to have a very low complaint rate relative to the later years, suggesting it may be a solid choice—provided you confirm that the vehicle has been well maintained.
