B0001 — Driver Frontal Stage 1 Deployment Control

B0001 indicates the airbag sensing and diagnostic module has detected an electrical fault in the driver’s frontal airbag first-stage (Stage 1) deployment circuit. This circuit runs from the module through the steering-column harness and clock spring to the driver airbag inflator. A fault can prevent the driver airbag from deploying in a crash and will normally illuminate the SRS/airbag warning lamp.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Clock spring failure or high resistance

The ribbon cable inside the steering-column clock spring flexes with every turn of the wheel and is the most common source of an open, high resistance, or intermittent connection in the driver airbag loop.

2. Wiring or connector fault in the deployment loop

Chafing, pin corrosion, terminal spread, or harness damage between the airbag module and the steering wheel can disrupt the low-current deployment circuit.

3. Driver airbag inflator internal fault

An open or out-of-spec resistance inside the first-stage inflator itself can set the code, though this is less common than clock-spring or harness faults.

4. Short to ground or short to voltage

The two-wire deployment circuit can short to chassis ground, battery voltage, or to another airbag circuit, causing the module to flag the loop as unsafe.

5. Airbag control module (SDM/ACM) internal failure

The sensing and diagnostic module can have an internal fault, but this is relatively rare and should only be suspected after the inflator, clock spring, and wiring have been tested.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all SRS DTCs and any freeze-frame or snapshot data with a scan tool that supports the airbag system
  2. Visually inspect the clock spring, yellow airbag connectors, and harness for damage, corrosion, or terminal spread
  3. Measure the driver frontal Stage 1 deployment loop resistance and compare it to the manufacturer’s specification; look for opens, shorts, or high resistance
  4. Perform pinpoint tests for shorts to ground and shorts to battery voltage on the deployment circuit
  5. Repair or replace the identified component, clear the code, and verify the SRS lamp operation and that the code does not reset
  6. Consider replacing the airbag control module only if all wiring, connectors, clock spring, and inflator tests are within specification and the code persists
