B0004 — Driver Knee Bolster Deployment Control

B0004 indicates a fault in the deployment control circuit for the driver knee bolster airbag. The SRS control module has detected an open, short-to-ground, short-to-power, or resistance problem in the circuit that fires the driver knee airbag inflator. This turns on the airbag warning light and disables that airbag until the fault is repaired.

1. Faulty driver knee bolster airbag inflator/squib

The inflator squib itself can fail with an open coil, internal short, or out-of-spec resistance, making the SRS module report a deployment-control circuit fault.

2. Wiring or connector damage between the SRS module and knee bolster

Harnesses routed under the steering column and dash can chafe, get pinched, corrode, or suffer terminal push-out, causing opens or shorts in the deployment circuit.

3. Poor connection at the knee bolster airbag connector

A loose, corroded, or improperly seated connector at the knee bolster can add resistance or create an intermittent open that the SRS module reads as a deployment-circuit fault.

4. Terminal or pin issues at the SRS/airbag control module

Corrosion, bent pins, or poor contact at the airbag control module connector can interrupt the driver knee bolster deployment circuit and set this code.

5. Internal SRS/airbag control module fault

Although uncommon, the SRS control module can have an internal driver or sensing failure for the knee bolster circuit; it should only be considered after the squib and wiring are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve and document all SRS codes and freeze-frame data, then clear the codes and confirm B0004 returns before testing.
  2. With the battery disconnected and the system fully depowered, visually inspect the driver knee bolster harness and connectors for chafing, corrosion, terminal damage, or push-out.
  3. Measure the knee bolster inflator squib resistance and compare it to manufacturer specifications; also check for shorts to ground and shorts to battery voltage on both control wires.
  4. Check continuity and isolation of the deployment circuit between the SRS control module connector and the knee bolster connector to locate an open or short in the harness.
  5. If the squib, harness, and connectors all test normal, evaluate the SRS control module and its connector terminals; replace or reprogram the module only per OEM procedures if confirmed faulty.
