Code P0127 indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an intake air temperature (IAT) sensor signal corresponding to an abnormally high temperature, typically above 300°F (149°C). This often points to a short-to-ground in the sensor circuit, a faulty sensor, or actual excessive under-hood heat.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for other codes and review freeze frame data to identify the conditions under which P0127 was set.
  2. Visually inspect the IAT sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Disconnect the IAT sensor and measure its resistance with a multimeter; compare to the manufacturer's temperature/resistance chart.
  4. Check the signal wire for a short to ground by measuring resistance between the signal terminal and chassis ground with the sensor and PCM disconnected.

  6. If no electrical fault is found, verify actual intake air temperatures with an infrared thermometer and inspect the air intake system for restrictions or missing heat shields; suspect PCM only as a last resort.
