P0205 indicates a malfunction in the electrical circuit that controls the fuel injector for cylinder 5. The powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an abnormal voltage or resistance condition and stored the code.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty cylinder 5 injector

The injector may have a shorted coil, open circuit, or internal mechanical failure that prevents proper operation.

2. Injector wiring harness damage

Chafed, cracked, or corroded wires or connectors in the injector circuit can cause intermittent or lost signals.

3. Injector driver (PCM output) failure

The PCM’s injector driver for cylinder 5 may be defective, delivering incorrect voltage to the injector.

4. High resistance or poor ground in the injector circuit

Loose ground connections, corroded terminals, or excessive resistance in the circuit can trigger the code.

5. PCM internal fault (rare)

A malfunction within the PCM itself is possible but is the least likely cause after all other components have been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify that the Check Engine Light is active and retrieve any additional related codes.
  2. Inspect the injector wiring harness for visible damage, corrosion, or loose connections; repair as needed.
  3. Measure injector resistance with a multimeter and compare to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Swap the cylinder 5 injector with a known good injector from another cylinder and clear the code; if the code follows the injector, replace it.
  5. If the injector and wiring test good, perform a PCM output voltage test on the cylinder 5 driver; replace the PCM only after confirming the driver output is out of spec.
