P0206 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code that indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an electrical fault in the fuel injector control circuit for cylinder 6. The fault typically involves abnormal resistance, an open circuit, or a short to ground or power in the wiring, connector, or the injector's solenoid coil.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed cylinder 6 fuel injector solenoid

The most common cause. The internal coil of the injector can develop an open circuit, short, or out-of-spec resistance over time due to heat cycling and electrical stress.

2. Damaged or chafed wiring to the cylinder 6 injector

The injector harness is often routed near hot exhaust components or sharp engine brackets, and insulation can melt or wear through, causing an open or short circuit.

3. Corroded, loose, or backed-out electrical connector

Injector connectors are exposed to heat, oil, and vibration. Corroded pins, oil-soaked seals, or terminals that lose tension can interrupt the circuit.

4. Poor ground or shared splice in the injector driver circuit

Some injectors share a common feed or ground wire. Corrosion or a broken splice elsewhere in the harness can mimic an injector failure on cylinder 6.

5. Intermittent connection from a failing relay or fuse

Although less common on individual-cylinder codes, a marginal relay or corroded fuse contact that drops voltage to the injector bank can trigger the code.

6. Internal PCM driver failure

Rare. The transistor that controls the cylinder 6 injector inside the PCM can fail, but this should only be considered after the injector, wiring, and connectors have all been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and review freeze frame data to confirm the fault is present on cylinder 6 and check for related misfire or fuel trim codes.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at the cylinder 6 injector for chafing, melted insulation, oil contamination, corrosion, and terminal tension.
  3. Measure the resistance of the cylinder 6 injector with a multimeter and compare it to the other cylinders; an open, shorted, or significantly out-of-range reading points to the injector itself.
  4. With the connector disconnected, check for proper supply voltage on the driver wire from the PCM (key on or while cranking) and verify a clean ground on the other terminal.
  5. Swap the cylinder 6 injector with an adjacent cylinder; if the code follows the injector, the injector is bad. If the code stays on cylinder 6, the wiring or PCM is at fault.
  6. Only after the injector, wiring, connector, and supply voltage have been verified should the PCM driver be tested with a lab scope or by substitution on a known-good vehicle.

Is the engine computer (PCM) usually the cause of P0206?

No. Despite what some sources claim, the PCM is one of the least common causes of P0206. The injector itself and its wiring/connector account for the vast majority of cases. The PCM should only be suspected after the injector and the entire harness have been electrically verified.

Can I keep driving with a P0206 code?

Short trips at low load are usually possible, but the engine will run poorly, fuel economy will drop, and unburned fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. The vehicle should be diagnosed promptly.

Do I need to replace all of the injectors if one fails?

Not necessarily. If the other injectors test within specification and the mileage is not extremely high, replacing only the failed cylinder 6 injector is acceptable. Replacing the full set is an option on high-mileage engines as preventive maintenance.

Will clearing the code fix the problem?

No. Clearing the code only erases the stored fault; the underlying electrical problem remains and the code will return as soon as the PCM re-detects the circuit fault.
