P0277 — Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit High

P0277 indicates the engine computer has detected abnormally high voltage on the control circuit for cylinder 6's fuel injector. In most cases this means the circuit is open — the computer is trying to energize the injector but cannot complete the electrical path. The vehicle may run rough or set additional misfire codes if cylinder 6 is not receiving fuel.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Open or damaged wiring to cylinder 6 injector

A broken wire, corroded terminal, or pushed-back pin in the injector connector is the most common cause of a high-voltage circuit code. The computer sees battery voltage because it cannot pull the circuit to ground.

2. Failed cylinder 6 fuel injector

An internally open injector coil will produce the same high-voltage reading as a wiring fault. Resistance testing or swapping injectors can isolate the failure.

3. Corroded or loose injector connector

Even if wiring is intact, corrosion, bent pins, or poor terminal tension at the injector connector can interrupt the circuit and trigger this code.

4. Wiring harness chafing or rodent damage

Physical damage to the engine harness from rubbing, heat, or animals can open the injector control wire. This is common on vehicles with aging or exposed harness routing.

5. Failed PCM/ECM injector driver (rare)

The internal driver transistor in the engine computer can fail, but this is uncommon and should only be considered after all wiring and the injector itself are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Inspect the cylinder 6 injector connector for corrosion, bent pins, or loose terminals and verify it is fully seated.
  2. Trace the injector wiring harness for visible damage, chafing, or breaks between the injector and the PCM.
  3. Disconnect the injector and measure coil resistance; compare to the manufacturer specification and to another cylinder's injector.
  4. Check for battery voltage on the injector power feed with the key on, and verify the control wire reaches the PCM connector with a continuity test.
  5. If available, use a noid light or oscilloscope on the cylinder 6 injector connector while cranking to confirm whether the PCM is pulsing the circuit.
  6. Only after wiring, connector, and injector are all confirmed good, test the PCM injector driver output and consider control-module failure.

Is it safe to drive with code P0277?

Extended driving is not recommended. Cylinder 6 may not be receiving fuel, causing a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter over time and increase emissions.
