P0369 — Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent Bank 1

P0369 indicates that the engine computer has detected an intermittent or erratic signal from the camshaft position sensor B (usually the exhaust camshaft sensor) on bank 1. The signal drops out or becomes unstable rather than failing completely, which can make it harder to diagnose than a hard failure.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty camshaft position sensor B

The sensor itself has an internal intermittent failure, producing an unstable or dropping signal as it heats up or vibrates. This is the most common cause of an intermittent cam sensor code.

2. Wiring or connector issue

Corroded, loose, or backed-out terminals in the sensor connector, or chafed/broken wiring, can cause the signal to cut out intermittently. Heat and vibration often aggravate these faults.

3. Oil or coolant contamination at connector

Engine oil leaking onto the sensor or connector can disrupt the electrical signal and cause intermittent readings. This is common on engines prone to oil leaks near the cam sensor.

4. Damaged or contaminated reluctor wheel

The tone wheel or reluctor ring that the sensor reads can be chipped, bent, or fouled with debris, producing an inconsistent signal. This is less common but should be inspected if the sensor and wiring test good.

5. Timing chain or belt wear

Excessive timing chain slack or a stretched belt can cause actual camshaft position variation that the PCM interprets as an intermittent sensor signal. Usually accompanied by timing-related codes.

6. Engine computer (PCM/ECM) failure

An internal fault in the PCM's camshaft sensor input circuit is rare. It should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, reluctor wheel, and mechanical timing have all been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for additional codes and note freeze frame data; other cam/crank or timing codes help narrow the problem.
  2. Visually inspect the camshaft position sensor B connector and wiring harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or oil contamination.
  3. With the engine running, monitor the camshaft position sensor B signal on a scan tool while gently wiggling the wiring and connector to see if the signal drops out.
  4. Back-probe the sensor connector and verify proper reference voltage, ground, and signal return per the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
  5. If electrical testing passes, remove the sensor and inspect the reluctor wheel through the opening for damage or debris.
  6. If all sensor and wiring checks are normal, verify mechanical timing is correct before considering the PCM.
