OBD-II code P0490 means the engine control module (PCM) has detected an abnormally high voltage signal in the control circuit of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve, typically labeled 'EGR A.' The 'high' condition usually indicates an open circuit, a short to power, or a failure inside the EGR solenoid or position sensor that drives the reading above the expected range.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty EGR valve or its internal solenoid/position sensor

The EGR valve itself is the most common cause. Internal coil opens, position sensor drifts, or the valve sticks due to carbon, all of which can push the circuit signal out of the expected range.

2. Wiring problems in the EGR control circuit

An open circuit, broken wire, chafed insulation, or a signal wire shorted to the power supply will all produce a high-voltage reading back to the PCM.

3. Corroded, loose, or backed-out EGR connector pins

Moisture and heat degrade the multi-pin EGR connector over time. Poor contact can mimic an open circuit and trigger a high-side fault.

4. Heavy carbon buildup in EGR passages or on the valve pintle

Excessive soot can prevent the valve from moving to commanded positions, which the PCM interprets as an implausible high signal.

5. Failed EGR vacuum or pressure control solenoid (older systems)

On systems that use a separate solenoid to modulate vacuum or pressure to the EGR, a stuck-open or shorted solenoid can set a high-circuit fault.

6. PCM/ECM driver issue (rare)

The engine computer is occasionally blamed for this code, but that diagnosis is usually wrong. A PCM fault should only be considered after the valve, wiring, and connectors have all been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and note any related EGR or misfire codes; clear and retest to confirm it returns under the same conditions.
  2. Visually inspect the EGR valve, connector, and harness for carbon contamination, heat damage, corrosion, loose pins, and broken wires.
  3. With the ignition on (engine off), measure reference voltage and ground at the EGR connector and compare to the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Command the EGR valve on with a scan tool while monitoring the actual position or duty-cycle reading to see if the valve responds as commanded.
  5. Measure the EGR solenoid or position sensor resistance, and check for shorts to power or ground in the control circuit back to the PCM.
  6. If the electrical side checks out, remove the EGR valve and inspect for carbon buildup; clean or replace as needed before condemning the PCM.

Does P0490 mean the engine computer needs to be replaced?

No. In the vast majority of cases the computer is not at fault. The EGR valve, its solenoid, and the wiring/connector account for most P0490 faults. Replacing the PCM should be a last resort, only after the valve and circuit have been thoroughly tested.

Will clearing the code fix the problem?

No. Clearing the code only erases the fault memory; if the underlying condition is still present, the code will return, often within one or two drive cycles.
