P0492 indicates the secondary air injection system on bank 2 is not delivering enough airflow during cold-start operation. The system injects fresh air into the exhaust stream to accelerate catalyst light-off; insufficient flow means the catalyst may not reach optimal temperature quickly enough, increasing emissions.

3. Vacuum or pressure hose leaks

Cracked, disconnected, or deteriorated hoses between the pump, solenoid, and check valve reduce delivered airflow.

4. Faulty air injection control solenoid or relay

An electrical fault in the solenoid that routes vacuum/pressure to the check valve, or its control relay, can prevent system activation.

5. Wiring or connector damage

Open circuits, short circuits, or corroded terminals in the pump or solenoid control circuits interrupt command signals.

6. PCM/ECM fault (rare)

Internal driver failure or software logic error in the control module is possible but uncommon; verify all other causes first.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note if P0491 (bank 1) is also present.
  2. Visually inspect all secondary air injection hoses, pipes, and connections on bank 2 for cracks, disconnections, or heat damage.
  3. Command the air pump on with a scan tool (or during cold start) and verify pump operation and airflow at the check valve outlet.
  4. Test the check valve for proper opening under pressure and sealing against exhaust back-pressure.
  5. Check power, ground, and control signal at the pump and solenoid connectors; repair any wiring faults.
  6. If all components test good, evaluate PCM control logic with a known-good module or updated software before condemning the PCM.
