P1101 is a manufacturer-specific OBD-II code (commonly associated with Ford vehicles) indicating that the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor readings fell outside the expected range during the Key On Engine Running (KOER) self-test, or that the self-test was aborted before completing. The powertrain control module (PCM) cannot confirm the MAF sensor is operating within its calibrated window, which generally points to a problem with the MAF sensor itself, its wiring, or the air intake path feeding it.
The MAF sensing element is the most common cause. Oil film, dirt, or a degraded hot-wire/hot-film element cause output to fall outside the self-test window, often after a recent air-filter change or oil service.
Chafed insulation, broken wires, moisture intrusion, or a poorly seated connector at the MAF sensor can produce out-of-range signal voltages that fail the self-test before the sensor itself is judged bad.
A heavily clogged air filter, collapsed intake duct, or disconnected/cracked intake boot alters actual airflow versus expected airflow and pushes the MAF reading out of its calibrated range.
