P2565 — Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor Circuit High

The engine computer monitors a position sensor on the turbocharger's variable-geometry or wastegate actuator to confirm the mechanism is moving as commanded. Code P2565 indicates the signal voltage from that sensor is higher than the expected operating range, which usually points to an open circuit, a short to voltage, or an internally failed sensor.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed boost control position sensor

The sensor itself has failed internally, producing an out-of-range high voltage signal. This is the most common cause of a circuit-high code for this component.

2. Open or damaged signal wire

A break in the signal wire between the sensor and the PCM allows the voltage to float high, which the PCM interprets as a circuit-high condition.

3. Short to voltage in signal circuit

The signal wire contacting a voltage source, such as the 5V reference or battery feed, raises the signal above its expected range.

4. Corroded or loose sensor connector

Corrosion, bent pins, or poor terminal tension at the sensor connector can create an open-circuit condition that causes the signal to read high.

5. Turbocharger actuator mechanical binding

A stuck or severely binding actuator could push the sensor to an extreme position. This is less common for a circuit-high code and more typical of a range or performance code.

6. PCM/ECM input circuit failure

A damaged input driver inside the engine computer could misread the sensor voltage. This is extremely rare and should only be considered after all wiring and sensor testing is complete.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and record any related turbocharger, boost, or sensor codes.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor connector and wiring harness for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or heat damage.
  3. With key on and engine off, back-probe the sensor signal wire and compare the voltage to the specified range for the current actuator position.
  4. Disconnect the sensor and check whether the signal voltage rises to reference level, then jumper the signal wire to ground and confirm the PCM reads near zero volts — this isolates wiring integrity from sensor failure.
  5. Perform a wiggle test on the harness while monitoring live data to detect intermittent opens or shorts.
  6. If all wiring and connector tests pass, replace the position sensor and recheck; only consider PCM testing if the circuit-high condition persists with a known-good sensor and verified wiring.
