P2839 indicates that the voltage signal from the shift fork B position sensor is higher than the expected range. This sensor tells the transmission control module (TCM) where the shift fork is located; an excessively high reading suggests a short to power, a faulty sensor, or wiring issue.

5. PCM/ECM malfunction

While sometimes suggested, a PCM/ECM fault is rare for P2839 and should only be considered after all sensor, wiring, and TCM possibilities are exhausted.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve freeze frame data and monitor the sensor voltage live; note if it stays at or above the high threshold.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor wiring and connectors for signs of chafing, corrosion, loose pins, or moisture intrusion.
