U0043 indicates that the vehicle's secondary communication bus (Bus B) is stuck at a low voltage state or has failed to maintain proper communication. This bus is used by various control modules to exchange data with each other and with the powertrain control module. When Bus B is low, modules that rely on this network may lose communication or operate incorrectly.

1. Wiring damage in Bus B circuit

Chafed, melted, or corroded wiring in the Bus B network can cause a short to ground, pulling the bus voltage low. This is the most common root cause of this code.

2. Failed control module on Bus B

A defective module connected to Bus B can fail in a way that shorts the bus to ground, collapsing communication for all devices on that network segment.

3. Damaged or corroded connectors

Water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins at connectors in the Bus B circuit can create high-resistance shorts or open circuits that prevent proper communication.

4. Short to ground in a sensor or actuator

A shorted sensor, switch, or actuator that shares the Bus B network can drag the bus voltage down and trigger this code.

5. Poor module ground

An intermittent or high-resistance ground at a module on Bus B can cause that module to behave erratically and pull the bus low.

6. PCM/ECM internal failure

The powertrain control module manages bus communication, but it very rarely fails in a way that specifically causes Bus B to go low. This is an uncommon cause and should be considered only after all other wiring and module possibilities are eliminated.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and note which modules are present versus missing. This identifies the scope of the network problem.
  2. Consult a vehicle-specific network diagram to identify all modules connected to Bus B and the shared wiring path between them.
  3. Visually inspect the Bus B wiring harness for damage, chafing, melted insulation, water intrusion, or corrosion, focusing on areas near moving parts or heat sources.
  4. Measure Bus B circuit resistance to ground and between data lines using a multimeter. A reading near zero ohms indicates a short to ground, which should be isolated by disconnecting modules one at a time.
  5. Check connector condition at each module on the bus: look for corrosion, bent pins, and proper terminal tension.
  6. If the short persists after disconnecting all known modules, the fault lies in the wiring harness itself and wire repair or harness replacement is required.

The PCM is unlikely to be the cause of U0043. While the PCM manages bus communication, a PCM failure typically causes a general loss of communication across multiple buses, not a specific Bus B Low condition. Why was I told to replace the PCM for this code?

Some repair facilities may suggest PCM replacement because U-codes are network-related and the PCM is the hub of vehicle communication. However, replacing the PCM almost never fixes a Bus B Low condition. The actual cause is almost always wiring damage, a shorted module on that bus, or a connector problem. Is it safe to drive with U0043?
