U0044 — Vehicle Communication Bus B High

U0044 is a network communication code indicating that the controller area network (CAN) bus labeled 'B' has a signal that is stuck or biased abnormally high. It means one of the data lines on Bus B is seeing a voltage level that should not be present, disrupting communication between the modules that share that bus.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Wiring short to power on the CAN-B high or low line

Chafed insulation, pinched looms, or a conductor pinched between the body and a bracket can short the bus wire to 12 V or to a switched feed, driving the line high.

2. Damaged, loose, or corroded connector on a Bus B module

Backed-out terminals, water ingress, or green corrosion at a module plug can bias the bus high or open the circuit enough to produce a stuck-high condition.

3. Aftermarket device tapped into the bus

Alarm systems, remote starters, audio interfaces, or telematics modules spliced into CAN-B can load or short the line, especially when their own wiring fails.

4. Open or missing termination resistor

Each CAN bus normally has two 120-ohm termination resistors. If one is lost (corroded joint, broken splice, removed module), bus voltage levels shift and a high-bias code can be set.

5. A faulty control module on Bus B pulling the line high

An internal transistor failure in any module on the bus can clamp the line at battery voltage. Identifying which one requires isolating modules one at a time.

6. Engine or powertrain control module (PCM/ECM) internal failure

A shorted transceiver inside the PCM can hold Bus B high. This is uncommon and should only be considered after every wiring, connector, and peripheral-module cause has been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored and pending codes from every module with a scan tool; note which modules do not respond, as that map localizes the fault to a bus segment.
  2. With the battery disconnected, inspect the Bus B harness for chafing, pinched sections, aftermarket splices, and connector condition at each module on that bus.
  3. Measure resistance across the CAN-B high and low lines at the data link connector with the ignition off; a healthy bus reads about 60 ohms (two 120-ohm terminators in parallel) and reads open with both ends isolated.
  4. With the ignition on, measure voltage on each CAN-B line to ground; both lines should sit near 2.5 V recessive, and a reading near 12 V or 0 V on one line confirms a hard short or stuck driver.
  5. Unplug modules on Bus B one at a time while watching bus voltage or resistance to find a module that is pulling the line high or killing termination.
  6. Verify repair by clearing codes, cycling the ignition, and driving a complete drive cycle while confirming all modules come back online and U0044 does not return.

Is U0044 the same as a bad PCM?

No. In real-world cases, the PCM is the cause of U0044 only on rare occasions. The code almost always points to wiring damage, a connector issue, a failed termination, an aftermarket tap, or another module on the bus. Replacing the PCM without checking those items first is one of the most common and most expensive misdiagnoses for this code.

Can U0044 be set by a weak battery or jump-start event?

Yes. Voltage spikes, a failing battery, or improper jump-starting can corrupt bus communication and set transient U-codes including U0044. If the code does not return after clearing and the charging system checks out, it may have been event-related rather than a persistent fault.

Is it safe to keep driving with U0044 stored?

It depends on which modules are affected. If critical systems such as the transmission, ABS, or engine controller are losing communication, the vehicle may enter a limp mode or stall, and it should not be driven. If only a non-critical body module is offline, limited driving is usually possible until repair.
