OBD-II code U0596 is a network communication code (U-code) that means another control module on the vehicle is receiving invalid, missing, or corrupted data from the 'Acac Converter Control Module' over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. It does not by itself confirm a hardware failure of that module — the problem can originate in the wiring, connectors, power supply, or in the module broadcasting the data.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring/connectors at the Acac module

By far the most common cause of any U-code. Broken CAN wires, backed-out pins, water ingress, or chafed harnesses interrupt or distort the data the module is trying to send.

2. Loss of power or ground to the Acac module

If the module cannot boot properly due to a blown fuse, bad relay, or poor ground, it may transmit invalid or incomplete messages onto the bus, which other modules will flag as U0596.

3. Failed Acac Converter Control Module itself

An internal failure in the module can cause it to send garbled or nonsensical data frames. This is a real possibility but is less common than harness and power issues.

4. CAN bus network faults (termination, shorts, high resistance)

Damaged bus wiring, incorrect termination resistance, or shorts between CAN high/low can corrupt messages from any module on the segment, with U0596 being one symptom.

5. Software/firmware mismatch or corrupted calibration

A recent flash, module replacement, or interrupted programming event can leave the module transmitting data the other controllers cannot interpret correctly.

6. Failed module that is setting and reporting U0596

The module logging the fault can itself be at fault, but this is the least likely cause and should only be considered after all wiring, power, and the named module have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all modules on the vehicle, not just the one reporting U0596, and record every related DTC and freeze-frame data.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness, connectors, and pins going to the Acac Converter Control Module for damage, corrosion, bent pins, or moisture; repair as found before continuing.
  3. Verify proper power supply and ground to the Acac module using a multimeter, including load-tested grounds, and check related fuses and relays.
  4. Use a scan tool or oscilloscope to monitor CAN bus traffic and confirm whether the Acac module is transmitting, transmitting erratically, or silent on the bus.
  5. Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and known calibration issues for the specific vehicle, and confirm the module's software level is current.
  6. If all wiring, power, and bus integrity check out, substitute or bench-test the Acac module, or reflash/reprogram it per manufacturer procedure, before considering any other module.
