This code indicates that the engine control module (PCM) has lost its data communication with the exhaust gas temperature sensor located on Bank 1, Sensor 2. This sensor is typically a digitally communicating sensor (rather than a simple thermistor) that reports exhaust temperatures to the PCM over a serial data line. When communication is interrupted, the PCM cannot monitor exhaust temperature at that location, which may affect emissions system operation and aftertreatment diagnostics.

1. Failed exhaust gas temperature sensor

The sensor itself is the most common failure point. Internal electronics in the sensor can fail, preventing it from communicating on the data bus.

2. Wiring or connector damage near the sensor

The sensor's connector or nearby wiring is exposed to high exhaust heat and road debris. Corroded pins, melted insulation, or broken wires interrupt the communication line.

3. Open or short on the communication bus line

A break, short to ground, or short to voltage on the serial data circuit between the sensor and the PCM will trigger this code. This may affect only this sensor or other devices on the same bus.

4. Reference voltage or ground supply issue to the sensor

If the sensor's power or ground supply is interrupted due to a fuse, wiring fault, or splice issue, the sensor cannot power up and communicate.

5. PCM internal communication fault

Extremely rare. A failure of the PCM's transceiver circuit for this data line could prevent communication. This should only be considered after all wiring, power, ground, and sensor checks are exhausted.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for any other communication or emissions codes that may share the same bus or relate to the same sensor.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor connector and wiring harness near Bank 1 Sensor 2 for heat damage, corrosion, loose pins, or chafing.
  3. Check for proper power and ground supply to the sensor using a multimeter, referencing a wiring diagram for pin assignments.
  4. Test the communication line for continuity, shorts to ground, and shorts to voltage between the sensor connector and the PCM connector.
  5. If wiring, power, and ground are all confirmed good, substitute a known-good sensor or replace the suspect sensor and retest communication.
  6. Only after all external checks are verified should the PCM be suspected; at that point, verify PCM connector pin fitment and power/ground to the PCM before considering replacement.
