U0670 — Lost Communication Fuel Temperature Sensor

U0670 means a control module (usually the PCM) can no longer communicate with or receive valid data from the fuel temperature sensor. Depending on the vehicle, this may be a dedicated sensor signal fault or a loss of serial-data communication on a LIN/CAN subnet. The code sets when the expected temperature message or voltage is missing, intermittent, or out of protocol for a calibrated period.

1. Failed fuel temperature sensor or internal sensing element

The sensor itself can fail open, shorted, or internally silent on the data bus, causing the module to report loss of communication. This is the single most common root cause for this specific U-code.

2. Wiring or connector fault to the fuel temperature sensor

Chafed, corroded, backed-out, or moisture-wicked pins in the sensor harness—especially near the fuel tank—can interrupt power, ground, or signal lines and produce a communication-loss code.

3. Power or ground loss to the fuel temperature sensor circuit

A blown fuse, bad splice, or corroded ground can keep the sensor from waking up or transmitting, which the PCM interprets as lost communication rather than a simple out-of-range value.

4. Network/LIN/CAN communication fault between sensor and module

If the sensor communicates over a serial bus, bus interference, incorrect termination, short-to-power/ground on the data lines, or a failing intermediate module can break the message path.

5. PCM software or hardware fault

A corrupted calibration, failed internal communication transceiver, or damaged PCM input can mimic a sensor communication loss, but this is genuinely uncommon and should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and bus are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve and document all DTCs, then determine whether the fuel temperature sensor is a standalone two-/three-wire device or a subnet/LIN/CAN module
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, and moisture intrusion; repair any terminal or wiring defects
  3. Check sensor power, ground, and signal/data-line integrity with a wiring diagram; verify supply voltage and ground continuity under load
  4. Test or substitute the fuel temperature sensor; compare resistance/voltage or bus activity to specification, and confirm the module recognizes it after replacement or repair
  5. If the sensor and wiring are proven good, evaluate bus topology and, only as a last step after manufacturer guidance, consider PCM reflash or replacement
