2004 Mitsubishi Galant — 2.4L

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 2004 Galant 2.4L.

Body PASSENGER CAREngine 2.4LTransmission Automatic 4-spd

As a mainstream passenger car, the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant pairs a 2.4L engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission to deliver an EPA-estimated 20 city and 27 highway mpg, relying on 4.5 quarts of 10W-30 or 5W-30 API oil to maintain its 23 combined mpg efficiency. The model carries a moderate reliability footprint characterized by 61 owner complaints predominantly focused on the vehicle's structure alongside a single recall. Within the broader 1990–2012 lineage of the Galant, the 2004 model falls well below the problematic 1994 peak of 263 complaints yet remains significantly higher than the 3-complaint low of 2011, marking it as a middle-tier year where structural concerns are the primary consideration for researchers.

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter every 7,500 mi; spark plugs at 105,000 mi; coolant every 30,000 mi. The big-interval services (every 30,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

After elevated federal activity through the late 1990s and early 2000s—peaking at 237 complaints and nine recalls in 1999 and remaining high through 2003 with 139 complaints and three recalls—the 2004 model year marks a sharp inflection point, dropping to just 61 complaints and one recall. While TSBs ticked up slightly to 94 from 71 in 2003, overall complaint volume and recall counts fell significantly, placing 2004 near the beginning of a sustained downward trend that continued through 2012. The data does not specify root causes, but the 2004 tallies for investigations, fire complaints, and crash complaints—zero, zero, and five, respectively—sit at the low end of the recorded arc. Top complaint areas for the year were Structure, Air Bags, Visibility, and Service Brakes, Hydraulic, though none dominate the modest total. Given its substantially lower complaint and recall profile relative to preceding model years, the 2004 Galant stands out as a comparatively favorable year to purchase within this generation.
