P2407 means the powertrain control module has detected an intermittent or erratic voltage signal from the evaporative emission (EVAP) leak detection pump (LDP) sense circuit. The sense circuit tells the PCM whether the EVAP system is holding vacuum during a self-test, so an unstable signal prevents the leak test from completing reliably.

1. Leak detection pump itself failing

The internal changeover switch or motor wears out, producing dropouts or unstable voltage on the sense line. This is the single most common cause of an erratic LDP signal.

2. Corroded, loose, or damaged LDP electrical connector

Moisture and oxidation at the pump's connector create an unstable connection. Unplugging, inspecting, and reseating the connector often restores proper signal.

3. Wiring harness damage between the LDP and PCM

Chafed insulation, broken wires inside the insulation, or a stretched harness near engine mounts can cause intermittent opens or shorts to ground that the PCM reads as an erratic signal.

4. Cracked, disconnected, or swapped vacuum hoses at the LDP

A hose that is not fully seated, cracked at a bend, or installed on the wrong port can keep the LDP from pulling a stable vacuum, indirectly causing the sense circuit to behave erratically.

5. Poor chassis or signal ground for the LDP circuit

A corroded or loose ground splice shared with the LDP can produce fluctuating reference voltage. Ground issues are less frequent than pump or connector failures but should be checked.

6. Faulty powertrain control module (PCM)

Genuine PCM failures that specifically produce an erratic LDP sense reading are rare. The PCM should only be considered after the pump, connector, harness, and grounds have all been tested and ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored and pending codes; note any related EVAP codes such as P2400-P2409 or P0440-P0455, as they often appear together.
  2. Visually inspect the leak detection pump, its connector, and the vacuum hoses attached to it for damage, corrosion, misrouting, or disconnection.
  3. With the key on, use a scan tool to monitor the LDP sense-circuit parameter in real time while commanding the EVAP self-test; look for dropouts, spikes, or frozen values.
  4. Backprobe the LDP connector to verify proper supply voltage, ground, and sense signal at the pump-side and PCM-side connectors. Compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Perform continuity and insulation resistance tests on each wire between the LDP and PCM to locate intermittent opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to other circuits.
  6. If wiring and pump inputs check out, substitute a known-good LDP temporarily to confirm whether the original pump's internal switch is the source of the erratic signal before considering any control module replacement.
