An open circuit means electrical current cannot flow to the actuator, so the PCM disables VVT control for that cylinder and sets the code.

Oil-soaked, corroded, or backed-out pins at the solenoid connector or the PCM connector interrupt the circuit and produce the same open-circuit reading as a failed solenoid.

4. Contaminated, low, or incorrect engine oil

Many VVT/exhaust control solenoids rely on clean oil at the correct viscosity; sludge or wrong oil grade can clog passages and indirectly trigger actuator circuit faults, though this more often produces performance codes than pure open-circuit codes.

5. Mechanical failure in the camshaft phaser or valve train

A seized phaser or severe mechanical fault can stall the actuator and mimic an open circuit, but is less likely than electrical causes for this specific code.

6. PCM/ECM internal driver failure

The driver's transistor inside the PCM can fail open, but this is rare. It should only be considered after the solenoid, wiring, and connectors have all been ruled out by direct testing.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm P3421 with a scan tool and review freeze-frame data; check for related VVT or cylinder 3 codes (for example P0014, P0019, P0303, P3420).
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at the cylinder 3 exhaust valve control solenoid for damage, oil contamination, corrosion, or loose pins.
  3. Unplug the solenoid and measure its resistance with a multimeter; compare to the manufacturer's specification (an infinite reading confirms the open circuit).
  4. With the connector unplugged and the key on, check for proper power supply and ground at the harness side using a test light or multimeter.
  5. Verify engine oil level and condition; change the oil and filter if dirty or overdue before condemning mechanical components.
  6. If the solenoid, wiring, and connectors all test good, backprobe the PCM terminals for proper control signal and continuity to ground; only then consider PCM driver or internal fault.
