P0498 — Evap System Vent Valve Control Circuit Low

P0498 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a voltage signal below the expected range in the evaporative emission (EVAP) system vent valve control circuit. The vent valve (also called the canister vent solenoid) normally opens to allow fresh air into the charcoal canister during purge and closes during leak testing. A low circuit voltage typically points to a short to ground, an open circuit, or an internally failed solenoid.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed EVAP vent valve/solenoid

The solenoid winding may be shorted internally, causing excessive current draw that pulls the control circuit voltage low.

2. Wiring short to ground

The control wire between the PCM and the vent valve may have insulation damage, contacting chassis ground or a grounded component.

3. Open circuit or high resistance in the control wire

A broken wire, corroded connector, or poor terminal contact can prevent the PCM from properly controlling the valve, resulting in a low voltage reading.

4. Blown fuse for the vent valve circuit

If the fuse supplying power to the vent valve is open, the PCM may read a low voltage on the control side when attempting to command the valve.

5. PCM/ECM driver circuit failure

Internal driver transistor failure in the PCM can cause a low output voltage; this is uncommon and should be considered only after wiring and component tests are conclusive.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the vent valve connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or disconnected terminals.
  2. Check the fuse that supplies power to the vent valve circuit; replace if blown and retest.
  3. Disconnect the vent valve and measure its internal resistance; compare to manufacturer specifications (typically 20–40 ohms).
  4. With the valve disconnected, use a scan tool to command the valve on/off while measuring voltage at the PCM side of the control wire; voltage should toggle near battery voltage and near zero.
  5. If voltage does not toggle correctly, perform a continuity check on the control wire between the PCM and valve connector; repair any open or short to ground.
  6. If all wiring and the valve test good, verify PCM output with a known-good valve or load tool before considering PCM replacement.

Can I drive with a P0498 code?

The vehicle is usually drivable, but the EVAP system will not perform leak self-tests and the vehicle will likely fail an emissions inspection. Prolonged operation with a stuck-open vent valve can allow fuel vapors to escape.

Is the PCM usually the cause of P0498?

No. PCM driver failure is rare. The vast majority of P0498 codes are caused by the vent valve itself, wiring faults, or a blown fuse. The PCM should be condemned only after the valve and circuit have been proven good.

Will clearing the code fix the problem?

Clearing the code only turns off the MIL temporarily. If the underlying circuit fault remains, the PCM will reset the code, often within one or two drive cycles.

Does a P0498 code mean the gas cap is loose?

No. A loose or missing gas cap typically sets codes such as P0455, P0456, or P0457. P0498 is specific to the vent valve control circuit voltage.
